Starting at the National Park Railway Station, Fishers Track is a mostly downhill trail with spectacular scenery. This Grade 2 track is an excellent backcountry ride for those mountain bike riders with only a little experience. The 17km track begins with a short climb to a summit with breathtaking views of Mount Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, Mount Tongariro and the Retaruke Valley. The downhill section of trail is 6km long and is a beautiful ride through farmland. Allow 2-3 hours to ride from end-to-end.

Fishers Track offers great scenery with a gentle climb in the Erua Forest, followed by a long 520m descent to the Retaruke Valley below. There are great views to our volcanoes and the more distant Mount Taranaki.

The start of Fishers Track is a wide gravelled road – the beneficiary of recent upgrades due to the development of the Mountains to Sea New Zealand Cycle Trail – Nga Haerenga, of which this track also serves as a feeder to. This smooth and easy riding trail is now a pleasure to ride. Once you reach the end of the track you can meet your pre-arranged shuttle back to National Park Village. You can also ride back to National Park Village via Raurimu, but expect a grunty climb and a further 20km of riding. If you are keen to explore one of the Great Rides of the New Zealand Cycle Trail then head north on Upper Retaruke Road at the T-intersection and ride approximately 10km to Monument Corner where you can join the Mountains to Sea cycle trail.
